BODYSHELL QUALITIES

Structural and body parts constitute the main areas of application for naturally hard and heat treatable aluminium alloys in the automobile industry. As far as the sheet used for the visible part of the body is concerned, the demand is for perfect surface quality, which must be guaranteed along the entire production chain, right up to the finished component. 

 

In addition to this clearly defined stipulation regarding a defect-free surface in a delivery condition, on a metallurgical level care is taken that during forming into a body part, no unwanted surface effects such as roping occur. This is achieved by means of special modifications to the alloys, the use of the latest casting technology and optimum rolling and heat treatment processes 

 

The same preconditions apply to optimized product modifications in connection with the special requirements relating to increased formability, improved bending, rapid hardening with maximum strength and special deformation behaviour under crash loads. Advanced metallurgical simulation tools are used in a support role for the definition of the main process parameters.

AMAG TopFormR SPF is a material that has been optimized for the superplastic forming process. This opens up fresh potential for customers, which ranges from far more complex geometries to the production of component units from a single sheet that would otherwise involve the joining of several parts.

EDT SURFACES AND DRY LUBRICATION

 

The AMAG advantage: Dry lubrication for fast-hardening alloys, optimized in a separate process  

A suitable combination of surface structure and coating has a major influence on the quality of further processing by customers. Therefore, AMAG offers all its automotive semis with a choice of EDT or mill finish. In addition, the surfaces can be provided with a conventional or dry lubricant. Of major importance in this regard is the even distribution of the lubricant across the entire width of the sheet. At AMAG this is ensured by a process stage, which is separate from heat treatment and especially significant with regard to fasthardening alloys.

SURFACE PASSIVATION

 

The AMAG advantage: State-if-the-art passivation line, already designed for all future coating requirements

In line with the special requirements of the automotive industry, AMAG has invested in a highly modern surface treatment line, which will fulfill current coating requirements and also accommodate future coating modifications. In the passivation line, conventional TiZr pretreatment processes are employed and also new passivation media adapted to high-strength alloys are applied; the optimum pickling medium and the preferred application method (chemcoater or spray passivation) can be selected. With this investment in a passivation line, AMAG has again underlined its long-term orientation towards the automotive industry.
